IT employees union calls for protest over work-life balance issues
The Karnataka State IT Employees Union has announced a protest to demand the implementation of various employee rights, particularly emphasizing a healthy work-life balance. The protest will take place at Freedom Park on March 9, with the slogan asserting that work-life balance is every employee’s right. Suhas, an IT professional, expressed concerns about the excessive workload in the industry. “Even though official working hours are set at 8-9 hours, employees are constantly burdened with overtime. In many cases, work continues even after office hours, and weekends offer no respite,” he stated. Employees have reported facing immense work pressure, affecting both their personal lives and mental well-being. The growing culture of extended work hours in IT companies has raised concerns about employees’ mental and physical health. Despite a complaint being filed with the labour minister in March last year, no concrete regulations have been introduced to address the issue. The employees’ union has now intensified its demand for mandatory rules to safeguard IT workers’ well-being and ensure fair working conditions. The protesting employees argue that the absence of strict labour laws for the IT sector has led to exploitative practices, with many companies expecting employees to be available round the clock. They stress that excessive workload, lack of breaks, and continuous pressure have resulted in burnout, anxiety, and other health issues. The union is urging the government to introduce clear policies that define work hours, prevent unpaid overtime, and ensure employees have adequate rest and personal time.
