Officials Monitor River Basins, Warn of Flood Risk in Coastal Karnataka Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for several regions of Karnataka, forecasting intense downpours over a five-day period starting Sunday, July 20. According to CS Patil, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru, coastal and south interior districts of the state are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall through Thursday, July 24.

The IMD further warned that strong surface winds are likely to accompany the rain during this period, which may intensify weather-related challenges in the affected regions. Officials are closely monitoring river basins, particularly in the coastal districts, where the possibility of localised flooding remains high. “There is a significant risk of flooding in river basins of the coastal belt, especially on July 20 and 21,” said CS Patil. The department has advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to stay alert and follow safety protocols issued by local authorities. Fishermen have also been cautioned against venturing into the sea during this time due to rough weather conditions.

Emergency response teams have been placed on standby, and district administrations have been instructed to take necessary preventive measures to minimise the impact of potential flash floods and waterlogging. With monsoon activity intensifying across the region, the IMD continues to monitor weather developments and issue timely advisories. Residents are urged to track updates from official sources and avoid unnecessary travel during the peak rainfall period.
