Karnataka Cabinet Seeks Public Input on Draft City Governance Reform

In a major step toward administrative restructuring, the Karnataka Cabinet has approved the formation of five new municipal corporations under the Greater Bengaluru framework. A draft notification detailing the boundaries of these proposed corporations was released on Saturday. Citizens have been given 30 days to submit objections or suggestions.

The restructuring is part of the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, which came into effect on May 15. Based on parameters such as population density, area, income levels, economic activity, and infrastructure availability, the state government has proposed five corporations: Bengaluru West, South, North, East, and Central.

The draft aims to enhance governance and bring long-pending civic elections closer to reality. The previous BBMP Council’s term ended on September 10, 2020, and since then, the civic body has been under administrative rule. Aspirants waiting for elections since then now see a clear path ahead.

Boundaries for each proposed corporation have been outlined in detail, covering specific roads, lakes, and infrastructure landmarks across the city. For example, the West Corporation will stretch from Tumkur Road to KR Road, while the South will include Sarjapur Road, Hosur Road, and parts of Bannerghatta. Objections or feedback can be submitted to the Additional Chief Secretary at Room 436, Vikas Soudha, Bengaluru – 560001. Once reviewed, the final decision will be taken to proceed with the new municipal structure. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has expressed keen interest in implementing this reform to improve urban governance and development.
