Greater Bengaluru to have five corporations
In a major administrative reform, the Karnataka government has announced the restructuring of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) under the “Greater Bengaluru” concept. Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar revealed via social media that the city will now be divided into five separate municipal corporations for better governance and urban planning.
According to the official notification, these five new corporations are:
1. Bengaluru North (158 sq. km, population: 1.8 million)
2. Bengaluru South (147 sq. km, population: 1.7 million)
3. Bengaluru East (168 sq. km, population: 0.9 million)
4. Bengaluru West (161 sq. km, population: 2.6 million)
5. Bengaluru Central (78 sq. km, population: 1.5 million)
Each region will cover specific zones and wards. For example, Bengaluru North will include Yelahanka, Hebbal, and parts of R.R. Nagar, while Bengaluru Central will consist of areas like Shivajinagar, Gandhinagar, and Chamarajpet. The redrawn map, shared by Shivakumar, aims to improve administrative efficiency, infrastructure development, and citizen services.
The government believes this move will bring decentralized governance and tailored urban development to each part of the rapidly expanding metropolis. Urban experts also suggest the move could reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and ensure better coordination across civic departments. The “Namma Bengaluru – Greater Bengaluru” vision, officials say, marks a step toward transforming Bengaluru into a globally competitive and liveable city.
