Bengaluru will witness a major administrative shift as the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act comes into effect on May 15, 2025. The state cabinet approved the implementation during a meeting on May 9. Under the new law, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will be restructured into seven independent municipal corporations for smoother administration.

The final rules for the Act are expected to be framed soon. Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced plans to merge Anekal Taluk into the Greater Bengaluru limits, pending discussions with local legislators. Urban planning experts suggest that new building regulations under the Act may relax height and size restrictions for residential and commercial structures, although this may raise concerns about neighboring property safety. BBMP has clarified that the new construction rules are not immediately enforceable.

Moreover, stricter penalties are proposed under the Act — violations like improper waste disposal could attract fines up to ₹2 lakh and even six months’ imprisonment. Citizens are urged to adhere strictly to civic rules. Separately, the Cabinet sanctioned ₹79.67 crore for the rejuvenation of Bellandur Lake, with 75% to be funded by the government and the rest through other financial sources. Furthermore, plans to replenish 41 lakes in Nelamangala and Doddaballapur Taluks using treated water under Phase 2 of the Vrishabhavathi Valley project were approved at an estimated cost of ₹280 crore.
