Govt Says Constituency Redistribution Notification Will Be Issued In 10 Days

The government has informed the High Court that it will issue a notification in the next 10 days regarding the re-allocation of constituencies for district and taluk panchayat elections. The State Election Commission had filed a Public Interest Litigation challenging the amendment to the Karnataka Panchayat Raj and Gram Swaraj Act to create the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Boundary Determination Commission by withdrawing the powers of delimitation and reservation of Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat constituencies from the State Election Commission.
The application was heard by a bench of Chief Justice Prasanna Balachandra Varale and Ashok S. Kinagi. State Advocate General Prabhulinga Navadagi, who was present during the hearing, said that the redistricting commission has completed all the processes related to the redistricting of the district panchayats and taluk panchayats. A final notification in this regard has been submitted to the government on January 30. He explained that a notification will be issued in this regard in the next 10 days.
A commission has been formed regarding ward reservation and a committee has been formed under the leadership of a retired High Court judge to consider political representation and make reservation. He explained that the case related to BBMP elections is in the Supreme Court and has given time till April 1, 2023 to fix political reservation for backward class. Also, the earlier 233 taluks have now increased to 238 taluks. The lawyer for the government had explained in an affidavit to the bench that 30 districts have been increased to 31.
Also, the notification is huge in thousands of pages and is not presented here. It has been given to Govt. Notification will be published in a week. The announcement of the notification is delayed as the approval of the Cabinet and the Chief Minister is required. The Principal Secretary of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department said that the notification will be published immediately.
