German influencer escorted off Church Street
German social media sensation Younes Zarou, who has over 21 million followers on Instagram, was asked to leave Bengaluru’s bustling Church Street after his unannounced visit triggered a large public gathering, raising safety concerns.
Prior to his arrival, Zarou had posted on Instagram: “Church Street, we are coming,” which led hundreds of fans to converge on the popular stretch in anticipation. However, the influencer had not sought permission for any public interaction, prompting swift action by the Cubbon Park Police. “A social media influencer with over 20 million followers announced his visit online, resulting in a sudden crowd in a narrow public area. Our team responded immediately, ensured public safety, and escorted him from the location,” said Akshay M Hakay, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division). He confirmed Zarou was later dropped off at another location after assuring police he would not return.
Authorities cited the tragic stampede during the RCB victory celebrations—where 11 people died—as a stark reminder of the risks posed by uncontrolled gatherings. Zarou was advised against engaging in social media activities that could unintentionally endanger public safety. Church Street, a lively and crowded area in central Bengaluru, is frequently visited by both locals and tourists. In a similar incident earlier this year, British singer Ed Sheeran’s street performance was also halted by police due to lack of permission. Officials emphasized the need for prior approval for any public event to maintain order and ensure safety.
