In a dramatic turn of events, a food inspector from Bengaluru Uttar Taluk was arrested on Friday for his alleged involvement in bribery. The inspector, identified as Mahantegowda B., was apprehended by the Lokayukta police while attempting to escape in a vehicle during an operation to arrest him while he was accepting a bribe. According to reliable sources, Mahantegowda had recently demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a businessman named Rangdhamayya for the verification of his business license. Rangdhamayya, unwilling to succumb to corruption, reported the matter to the Bangalore City Police Division of Lokayukta. Prompt action was taken, leading to a carefully planned arrest operation. During the operation, the Lokayukta police intercepted Mahantegowda while he was accepting a sum of Rs 43,000 from Rangdhamayya at a location in the city. Realizing that he was cornered, the inspector made a desperate attempt to evade arrest by getting into a car. A high-speed chase ensued as the determined police pursued him for 15 kilometers along the Nelamangala Sondekoppa Road. Showing incredible tenacity, the law enforcement officers skillfully surrounded the suspect's vehicle and prevented his escape. In a final act of resistance, Mahantegowda even tried to board a vehicle occupied by government employees and Lokayukta policemen who had arrived as witnesses. However, his efforts were in vain as the officers followed him closely and successfully apprehended him.
Mahantegowda was caught with the bribe money in his possession, further incriminating him in the case. In addition to the charges filed under the Control of Corruption Act, a separate case has been registered at the Nelamangala Police Station for obstructing the duty of government employees and attempting to flee.
