Flex banner menace returns in Bengaluru as leaders flout ban, action demanded

Despite a ban on flex banners and cutouts in Bengaluru, the city is once again witnessing a surge in unauthorized installations, particularly by public representatives themselves. In Vijayanagar, huge flexes and cutouts congratulating Congress MLAs M. Krishnappa and his son, Govindrajanagar MLA Priya Krishna, have mushroomed across the area, overshadowing public spaces.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had earlier warned against erecting flex banners, citing a court order that allows a fine of ₹50,000 for violations. He had assured strict action, stating that even government events would require prior permission for advertising. However, these promises remain largely unfulfilled as leaders of his own party continue to violate the rules openly, facing no visible consequences.

Bengaluru’s streets, especially near Toll Gate and major junctions, are lined with towering banners, deteriorating the city’s aesthetic appeal. Adding to the concern, citizens have reported injuries from loosely installed structures. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation recently met BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath, urging immediate action against offenders. Jagadish Chandra, AAP Bengaluru City General Secretary, criticized the BBMP, stating that strict enforcement could have saved the municipal body hundreds of crores in potential revenue while preserving the city’s beauty. While DCM Shivakumar had emphasized a complete ban by August 15 and promised stringent enforcement, the lack of action highlights a worrying gap between official statements and ground reality. Citizens now demand that Bengaluru’s leaders respect the laws they themselves propose.
