The Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that 64 out of 114 fried green peas samples tested across the state contain the artificial dye Tartrazine, making them unsafe for consumption.

The issue came to light after videos circulated on social media showing the use of artificial colors in fried green peas. In response, the FDA directed its officers to investigate and collect samples for testing. So far, 114 samples have been collected from various locations across the state and sent to laboratories for analysis. Out of the 96 samples analyzed, only 32 were deemed safe, while 64 were found to contain Tartrazine, a synthetic yellow dye that is not permitted in food preparation due to health risks.

The FDA has stated that any food containing artificial coloring falls under the "unsafe" category as per the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The use of such dyes can pose health hazards, prompting stricter monitoring by the authorities.

Additionally, the FDA had earlier collected 70 green pea samples for further analysis. The remaining untested samples will be characterized in the coming days, and legal action will be taken based on the final laboratory reports. The Commissioner of Food Safety has assured that necessary steps will be taken to prevent the use of harmful additives in food products.
