District issues safety advisory to avoid thunderstorm hazards

Published on

In light of frequent thunderstorms and lightning strikes during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons in Karnataka, the National Disaster Management Authority has issued a detailed advisory. The district administration has urged citizens to follow safety measures to protect themselves from the adverse effects of thunderstorms.

Key Public Advisory During Thunderstorms:

Residents are advised to check weather updates and alerts shared through the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) on mobile devices before stepping out. People should avoid outdoor activities such as farming, cattle grazing, boating, or general travel during adverse weather. Metal-roofed structures are unsafe during storms; shelter should be taken in secure buildings.

People in elevated areas such as hills or mountain peaks must move to low-lying, flood-safe zones. Stay away from lakes, rivers, electric poles, mobile towers, windmills, and railway tracks. In case of being caught outdoors, squat low with feet together, head down, and ears covered.

Avoid shelter under trees, power poles, or using metal objects. Refrain from using mobile phones or umbrellas with metal rods. Keep doors and windows closed, and stay away from open flames and electrical sources.

Children, the elderly, and animals should be moved to safe shelters. Avoid water-related activities like bathing or washing as lightning can travel through pipes. Do not use wired telephones or ride open vehicles. Avoid parks, pools, and beaches during a storm.

Those boating or swimming should immediately reach a safe shore. Remain inside vehicles with windows closed. As lightning can also trigger forest fires, people in wooded areas should relocate to open, clear ground.

The administration urges everyone to act responsibly and follow these precautions to stay safe during stormy conditions.
