Dengue cases drop by 75 per cent

BBMP’s intensified anti-dengue measures have led to a sharp 75% drop in cases this year, with just 1,676 reported so far and no deaths. Focused awareness campaigns, targeted spraying in vulnerable areas, and strict vigilance by health officials have contributed to the success.

Sustained efforts by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to curb dengue have shown significant results, with only 1,676 positive cases reported between January 1 and July 23 this year—down from 7,280 cases during the same period in 2023. No dengue-related deaths have been reported so far in 2024, according to data from the health and family welfare department.

Comparatively, BBMP reported 2,313 dengue cases and no deaths in 2022. That figure jumped to 8,609 cases with four deaths in 2023, and surged to 14,950 cases with three deaths by early December 2024.

BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao credited the drop in cases to intensified prevention efforts. “Though we have dengue cases, the situation is far better than last year. The drill against dengue is continuing and our health officials are on alert,” he said.

The civic body has focused on awareness campaigns, targeted spraying in waterlogged and low-lying areas, and larva source reduction. “We are educating people, especially students, on avoiding water stagnation to prevent mosquito breeding,” Rao added.
