Debate over second, third airports in gains momentum
Bengaluru is at the center of an intense debate regarding the need for additional airports. While the construction of a second airport is already in discussion, some experts argue that the city requires not two, but three airports to accommodate its rapid growth and increasing air traffic. Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Devanahalli is currently under immense pressure, handling millions of passengers annually.
To address this congestion, the Karnataka state government is actively working on developing a second airport, with locations like Nelamangala and Kanakapura Road being considered. However, many believe that a third airport is also necessary to meet future demands. The proposal has sparked disagreements between North and South Karnataka, with some questioning why a second airport should be in Bengaluru instead of another part of the state.
Supporters argue that major global cities like New York, Paris, and London already have multiple airports, and Bengaluru must follow suit to sustain its growth. Adding to the discussion, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has advocated for expanding the city’s airport infrastructure. Meanwhile, some experts suggest upgrading the existing HAL Airport as the city’s third aviation hub. The final decision regarding the development of new airports is expected to be made soon, as the state government continues to assess feasibility and public demand.
