City Still Awaits Rain As Experts Discuss Climate Patterns

Published on

Bengaluru remains in anticipation of rainfall as experts delve into the intricacies of climate patterns and their potential impacts on precipitation. While a recent report suggests a possible connection between the ongoing drought and the 'Super El Nino' phase, discussions on the emergence of a La Nina phase offer cautious optimism amidst the unpredictability of weather.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), specific regions of North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka experienced rainfall.

Private weather experts have highlighted the occurrence of a 'Super El Nino' phase, characterized by the El Nino phenomenon surpassing a critical temperature threshold in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.

The Skymet report identifies years marked by Super El Nino events, including 1965-66, 1972-73, 1982-83, 1997-98, 2015-16, and most recently, 2023-24. These periods witnessed El Nino conditions exceeding the 2°C threshold, leading to significant climate shifts.

El Nino advisories are issued to monitor the persistence of El Nino or La Nina conditions. Currently, both advisories and watches are expected to continue for the next 4-6 weeks until ENSO returns to a neutral state.

The report also examines the Southern Oscillation Index and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), highlighting their roles in modulating Indian monsoon rainfall

Experts remain cautiously optimistic about the monsoon season. A positive alignment of La Nina and positive IOD, similar to that observed in 2007, suggests a potentially favorable outcome for monsoon rainfall. As discussions continue, Bengaluru residents hope for much-needed relief from the persistent dry spell.
