CCTV surveillance mandatory in Karnataka colleges
In a move to improve student safety and monitor campus activities, the Karnataka government has made CCTV surveillance mandatory in all degree colleges and universities under the Higher Education Department. This includes government-run, government-aided, and private institutions across the state.
The decision follows a rise In incidents such as ragging, drug-related activities, sexual harassment, and other illegal behavior reported from various college and university campuses. The department has issued strict orders to install CCTV cameras throughout the premises to curb such incidents and ensure a safe learning environment.
The Commissionerate of Collegiate Education has directed all First Grade Government Colleges to use available funds for the installation of CCTV cameras. Institutions must complete the installation and submit compliance details to the department by July 21.
Officials stated that surveillance systems would help in:Monitoring and preventing ragging cases, Detecting and stopping drug usage and sales on campus, Keeping a check on sexual harassment complaints, Controlling unauthorized or illegal campus activities.
This directive is seen as a proactive step toward enhancing campus discipline and safety in the wake of rising concerns among students, parents, and faculty. The government emphasized that surveillance footage may also be used as evidence in legal or disciplinary proceedings, strengthening administrative control. The order Is expected to improve accountability within institutions and reassure stakeholders that necessary steps are being taken to create a safer academic environment across Karnataka’s higher education campuses.
