Bus stops causing traffic issues being relocated
Bengaluru authorities have begun shifting 52 bus stops that obstruct traffic movement as part of efforts to ease congestion. A joint survey conducted in 2024 by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), and Traffic Police identified these locations as problematic.
Notable locations such as the Silk Board Junction bus stop (towards Banashankari) and ITPL bus stop (towards KR Puram) are being moved a few meters to reduce congestion and improve pedestrian movement.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety. Additionally, the traffic police have resumed towing operations in 22 high-density corridors and 75 key junctions, targeting illegal parking. Some traffic signals have also been relocated, though full signal synchronization will take more time.
The BBMP Is also renovating 60 bus shelters across the city to enhance commuter facilities. The project aims to address complaints about poor infrastructure at bus stops, which often results in buses not stopping at designated locations and passengers waiting on roads.
The Traffic Engineering Cell is overseeing the construction of four new bus bays with thermoplastic painting to improve traffic management. According to BMTC guidelines, bus stops should not be placed at junctions due to high pedestrian and vehicle movement. Traffic expert Professor MN Shreehari cited Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines, which recommend placing bus stops 100-120 meters away from junctions. With 1,500 junctions in Bengaluru, experts stress the need for a technical survey to ensure optimal placement of bus stops.
