BMTC wins 2025 Blue Green Award
The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has been conferred with the prestigious “Blue Green Award 2025” by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in recognition of its pioneering eco-friendly initiatives aimed at curbing air pollution in the city.
BMTC was selected from among 175 organizations for its outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability, including the reduction of carbon emissions, adoption of electric vehicles, and implementation of green practices across its operations.
On June 6, 2025, the award was presented by Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Bengaluru Urban Development, Shri D.K. Shivakumar. The award was received on behalf of BMTC by Managing Director Shri R. Shivakumar Ramachandran, IAS.
BMTC’s major eco-friendly contributions include the introduction of paperless digital passes, with over 46 lakh digital tickets issued so far — a step that significantly reduces paper consumption and protects trees. In terms of transport infrastructure, BMTC operates 1,420 electric buses with zero emissions and has phased out 770 old BS-III buses. Additionally, 1,643 BS-VI buses are now in service, collectively preventing 2.5 tonnes of carbon emissions daily.
To conserve water, BMTC uses treated water for cleaning buses and has installed STP/ETP systems at its TTMCs and depots, achieving 90% water recycling. Furthermore, the corporation has installed 1,424 KWP solar power plants across 22 depots and 2 central workshops, which have generated 42 lakh units of electricity and helped avoid 1.68 lakh kilograms of CO₂ emissions. These efforts underscore BMTC’s leadership in sustainable urban transport.
