BMRCL approves Namma Metro phase 3 expansion, marking major step in Bengaluru’s transit development

For over a decade, Namma Metro has been an essential part of the daily commute for millions in the city. The metro service, which began 13 years ago, has now expanded to 78 km, becoming the most reliable mode of transportation for Bangaloreans, offering timely travel without the hassles of traffic jams or weather disruptions.

The metro’s popularity continues to rise as more people seek an efficient alternative to the city’s congested roads. In the coming years, the metro network is set to grow significantly, with plans to add 174 km to the existing network. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Indian and Karnataka governments, is working towards reducing traffic congestion by connecting all four directions of the city.

Namma Metro’s journey began on October 20, 2011, when former Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda launched the service. The initial route, which covered 6 km between Baiyappanahalli and Mahatma Gandhi Road, quickly gained public acceptance, bringing a transport revolution to Bangalore’s tech-savvy population.

As the metro network expands, it is expected to alleviate the city’s notorious traffic woes further. The BMRCL has already introduced metro services to key areas, including Electronics City, K.R. Puram, and Kempegowda International Airport, with future plans for more routes, including the crucial Sarjapur to Hebbal red line. The metro’s operations continue to be a symbol of urban progress for the city.
