A BJP worker, Vinay Somaiah from Kodagu district, allegedly died by suicide in Bengaluru on Friday. He was found hanging at an office, police said. Vinay, who was in his mid-thirties, reportedly left behind a death note detailing the emotional distress he faced following his arrest.

Two months ago, Vinay was arrested by Madikeri police based on a complaint from a Congress worker. He was accused of making comments against Virajpet Congress MLA A S Ponnanna in a WhatsApp group, which he administered. After being released on bail, Vinay claimed in his note that the FIR was “politically motivated” and caused his family immense humiliation.

The BJP held a protest in Madikeri demanding justice for Vinay. State BJP President B Y Vijayendra urged Home Minister G Parameshwara to investigate the case seriously, warning of strong protests if action is not taken.

Parameshwara confirmed that the DCP will lead the investigation. “Once the FIR is registered, we will act based on the facts that come out,” he said.

Vijayendra alleged that BJP workers are facing increasing harassment under the Congress government, and described Vinay’s death as a tragic result of political pressure.
