Bengaluru’s ongoing footpath woes leave pedestrians stranded

Prolonged construction work in key areas of Bengaluru is leaving pedestrians at risk, hindering safe passage.

Navigating the city’s roads has become increasingly challenging for pedestrians. While footpaths are meant for safe passage, ongoing construction projects have rendered many of them inaccessible. The situation has created chaos, especially near Civil Court, Bengaluru University, Arts College, and Science College, where both sides of the footpaths have been dug up under the pretext of development work.

The city’s traffic police mandate that pedestrians use footpaths for their safety. However, the lack of usable pathways forces thousands of students and commuters to risk walking on busy roads. “We understand the need for development, but these projects should be completed swiftly. The prolonged construction work makes our daily commute a nightmare,” complained a student who uses the area frequently. Footpaths, a critical component of pedestrian safety, are disappearing across major city roads as slow-paced development projects disrupt public movement.

The affected areas include some of the busiest streets, with high foot traffic from students and office-goers. Many residents are frustrated with the delays, urging authorities to expedite the work to minimize inconvenience. “Walking on these roads is like walking into danger. The construction work is so slow, it feels like it will never end. This is not the development we hoped for,” said another commuter. Bengaluru’s recurring issue of inaccessible footpaths highlights the need for better urban planning and timely execution. Citizens continue to hope for swift resolution and safer walkways.
