The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to reintroduce the 'Pay and Park' system across major commercial roads in the city, aiming to streamline parking and ease traffic congestion. Under the new policy, two-wheelers will be charged ₹15 per hour, and four-wheelers ₹30 per hour at designated locations.

In the first phase, 14 high-traffic commercial areas — including MG Road, Brigade Road, and Commercial Street — will implement the system. BBMP estimates an annual revenue of ₹7 crore from these zones. Parking operations will be managed by private contractors, responsible for both fee collection and infrastructure upkeep.

The move is part of a larger effort led by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), which has introduced Parking Policy 2.0 to establish structured and uniform parking systems citywide. With Bengaluru’s vehicle count surpassing 1.25 crore, parking infrastructure has lagged behind, prompting a need for regulated and sustainable solutions.

The policy promotes public transport and mandates that commercial buildings provide dedicated parking or allocate ground-floor space for parking. The overarching goal is to reduce reliance on private vehicles and decongest busy roads.

BBMP officials confirmed that roads already under some version of pay-and-park — including Church Street, St. Mark’s Road, Museum Road, Lavelle Road, and Kasturba Road — will be integrated into the expanded plan, with management handed to private contractors.

The system is expected to bring not only revenue but also improved traffic flow and better urban mobility governance.
