Bengaluru to get double-decker roads for suburban rail connectivity
Bengaluru is set to witness a significant transformation in its suburban transportation network with the introduction of double-decker flyovers aimed at reducing traffic congestion. This innovative infrastructure will provide seamless connectivity from Majestic to Jagjivanram Nagar, Vijayanagar, Kengeri, NICE Road, and Kempegowda Layout through the K-RIDE corridor.
The double-decker structure will consist of two levels: the first level will feature a two-lane road flyover (each lane 7.5 meters wide), while the second level will accommodate suburban trains. The project is part of Bengaluru’s suburban rail plan, covering four corridors totaling 148 km, with around 61 km of elevated routes designated for double-decker construction. One of the key projects under this plan is the 16 km double-decker flyover between KSR Bengaluru and Kengeri, extending along the Parijata route (Corridor-3) of the suburban rail system.
The Kengeri-Whitefield corridor, spanning 35 km, will also adopt this model. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (K-RIDE), responsible for the project’s execution, have allocated ₹350 crore for the initial phase. The success of the city’s first double-decker road from Ragigudda to Silk Board, which reduced travel time from 20 minutes to just 5 minutes, has inspired further expansion. In the upcoming Metro Phase-3 project, double-decker flyovers will be constructed along two major routes: Kempapura to Sarjapur (32.15 km) and Hosahalli to Kadabagere (12.5 km). An estimated ₹18,000 crore has been earmarked for the development of 41 km of road-cum-metro double-decker corridors.
