Bengaluru to Get 40 km Tunnel Roads to Ease Traffic Congestion
The city of Bengaluru is set to witness a major infrastructure upgrade with the development of a 40-kilometer-long tunnel road project aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the city. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the tunnel road has been prepared by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which will oversee the implementation of this ambitious initiative. Of the proposed 40 km tunnel roads, an 18 km north-south corridor will connect Hebbal flyover in the north to Silk Board junction in the south, while a 22 km east-west corridor will link KR Puram in the east to Mysore Road in the west. These tunnel roads are expected to provide significant relief from the chronic traffic congestion that has plagued Bengaluru, enhancing commuting efficiency and reducing travel time across key routes. A feasibility study conducted by a consultant has indicated that constructing a single-tube tunnel would be more cost-effective compared to a twin-tube tunnel. This is expected to help in optimizing the project cost and ensuring its timely completion. To fund this massive infrastructure project, the BBMP plans to raise Rs 19,000 crore from the open market. This move follows the government’s recent approval of a sovereign guarantee for a loan of Rs 27,000 crore from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) for the 73 km Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project. The 40 km tunnel road project is expected to significantly alleviate Bengaluru’s traffic congestion issues, improving urban mobility and providing smoother commutes for residents.
