Bengaluru on alert over security threats

Bengaluru is on high alert following heightened concerns over the presence of sleeper cells and undocumented immigrants, especially from Pakistan. In response to the Centre’s suspension of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) for Pakistani nationals, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara has assured that strict action will be taken against illegal residents.

“We are working in coordination with central intelligence agencies. Any Pakistani national found living illegally, particularly in Bengaluru, will be identified and deported through the High Commission,” he stated. The Bengaluru police have launched an intensive verification drive, focusing on areas with high concentrations of lodges, guesthouses, and informal settlements. These localities are under close scrutiny, as they are believed to potentially harbor illegal residents. In addition, officers from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have been deployed within city police stations to monitor intelligence inputs and act swiftly in the face of potential threats. Security agencies are also closely monitoring sleeper cell activity, with concerns that operatives could be blending in among the city’s population.

Authorities have warned that individuals lacking proper documentation will be detained and handed over to diplomatic missions for deportation. This increased vigilance follows the national effort to tighten border security and enhance urban safety, especially after the devastating 2019 Pulwama terror attack. While the public has been asked to stay calm, Bengaluru residents are encouraged to assist with the verification process and report any suspicious activity. The situation remains fluid as authorities continue their ongoing monitoring of developments.
