Bengaluru gets three new police divisions
In a major administrative move to improve law enforcement and ensure better policing in a rapidly growing urban landscape, the Karnataka government on Tuesday approved the expansion of the Bengaluru City Police Commissionerate from eight to eleven divisions.
The decision adds three new divisions — North West, South West, and Electronic City — to the existing structure, which currently comprises Central, West, East, South, Southeast, North, Northeast, and Whitefield divisions. The expansion aims to decentralize policing, reduce the burden on existing divisions, and improve response times, particularly in high-density residential and commercial areas.
The proposal, which was first announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the state budget presentation in March 2025, is being implemented in response to Bengaluru’s rapid growth and the increasing demands on civic and law enforcement services. With the city now a hub of global tech firms, sprawling residential complexes, and industrial corridors, the need for localized policing has become urgent.
The new divisions are expected to be operational soon, with senior officers already being considered for key postings. Infrastructure planning, allocation of personnel, and jurisdictional mapping are currently underway, according to home department officials. Citizens and civic groups have welcomed the move, stating that the presence of more police divisions would improve law and order, reduce crime rates, and foster quicker coordination during emergencies. The state government has assured that the expansion will be supported with sufficient resources and technological upgrades to boost overall policing efficiency across the city.
