Bengaluru Cantonment Railway Station Set For Redevelopment
The Bengaluru Cantonment railway station is undergoing a transformative redevelopment project, featuring innovative additions aimed at enhancing passenger experience and infrastructure. Spearheaded by the Constructions Division of South Western Railway (SWR), the project, valued at Rs 480 crore, promises several unique features.
Among the highlights of the redevelopment is the creation of two levels of underground parking capable of accommodating 500 cars, in addition to ground-level parking for both cars and two-wheelers. The station will also boast separate 'Arrival' and 'Departure' zones akin to an airport, offering streamlined passenger flow.
Ramesh Kambli, SWR's Chief Engineer, disclosed that 15% of the station's civil work is done, including excavation for underground parking. Notable is the 'Air Concourse,' a 136-meter-long structure above tracks, promising passengers a unique experience with amenities and entertainment. It's a significant feature in the station's redevelopment.
Additionally, the station will receive a comprehensive roofing overhaul, presenting a cohesive structure on both sides. New platforms, such as 1B, 1C, 1D, and 1E, are operational, catering to suburban and long-distance train services. Further upgrades involve the erection of two modern Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) with lifts, escalators, and stairs for enhanced accessibility. These FOBs, spanning up to 12 meters wide, will be strategically located along the platform length.
To better blend the station with its surroundings, a Foot Over Bridge linking platforms to Bamboo Bazaar is underway. The BBMP FOB near the main entry needs relocation for construction, requiring action from the Constructions Division. Expected to finish by October 2025, the Bengaluru Cantonment railway station redevelopment aims to elevate passenger experience and regional infrastructure standards.
