The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to issue identity cards to street vendors in the city to regulate and support their businesses. BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath has instructed officials to distribute these identity cards promptly to the street vendors identified in a recent survey. During a meeting with officials on March 3, Giri Nath reviewed multiple civic issues, including property tax collection, welfare programs, and the survey of out-of-school children. He revealed that approximately 27,000 street vendors have been identified across BBMP’s eight zones and emphasized the urgent need to issue identity cards to them. The Chief Commissioner also highlighted the importance of finalizing the format of the identity cards. He stressed that street vendors should be allowed to operate only within designated business zones after receiving their ID cards. This step is aimed at maintaining order in public spaces while ensuring vendors have legal recognition and support. Additionally, Giri Nath instructed officials to conduct a thorough survey of out-of-school children within BBMP’s jurisdiction and take necessary actions for their education. He also reviewed the status of e-Khata registrations, noting that new registrations for 10,000 property owners have been opened online. The BBMP’s initiative is expected to bring better organization to street vending activities while ensuring that vendors operate within legal parameters, reducing conflicts and improving urban management.
