BBMP to auction properties of chronic tax defaulters
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is taking stringent measures to recover outstanding property taxes by auctioning properties of chronic defaulters. This action is in line with section 156(5) of the BBMP Act 2020, following multiple attempts to collect the dues, including issuing show cause notices, demand notices, property attachment orders, and sealing non-residential properties.
As a final step, properties of these defaulters are now being put up for auction. If the auctioned amount exceeds the owed property tax dues, the surplus will be returned to the property owners' bank accounts.
The BBMP has identified 8-10 top defaulters from each zone and fixed auction dates for these properties. The auction process will begin with chronic defaulters and expand weekly to include both commercial and residential properties across the city.
Currently, around 2 lakh properties have unpaid taxes. Property owners are urged to clear their dues promptly to avoid facing similar recovery actions in the future.
This auction is being done under section 156 sub section 5 of the BBMP Act 2020 as these property owners did not pay tax arrears despite the following steps:
(1) Show Cause Notice
(2) Demand Notice
(3) Attachment order on properties
(4) Sealing in case of non residential properties
