BBMP Extends property tax payment deadline with 5% discount for 2025-26 fiscal year
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) recently announced an attractive incentive for property taxpayers within its jurisdiction. While initially offering a 5% discount for those who paid their property tax for the 2025-26 fiscal year by April 30, the BBMP has now extended the deadline to May 31, 2025, along with the same 5% rebate. This move is seen as a strategic effort by the civic body to boost revenue collection and ease compliance for taxpayers amidst ongoing financial challenges.
In a press release issued by BBMP, it was initially communicated that residents who paid their full property tax dues for the 2025-26 year before April 30 would be eligible for a 5% rebate. Recognizing the need to encourage more timely payments, the BBMP authorities have decided to extend this deadline by one month. Now, all property owners can settle their taxes by May 31, 2025, and avail of the 5% discount.
The BBMP’s move aligns with provisions under the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, 2020, specifically Section 144(8), which allows the government to extend tax payment deadlines through official notifications based on recommendations from the municipal council. The extension underscores the government’s flexibility in administrative procedures aimed at increasing revenue and providing relief to taxpayers.
A formal circular detailing the extension and discount scheme has been issued, emphasizing that all property owners who clear their dues by May 31 will benefit from the 5% rebate on their property tax. The circular is aimed at motivating timely compliance and ensuring steady revenue flow for the civic body, which faces financial pressures to fund development projects and public services.
In its official Twitter handle, BBMP announced:
*"5% rebate deadline on property tax for the year 2025-26 in BBMP limits extended to 31st May, 2025."*
The tweet further included a copy of the circular for reference, emphasizing transparency and ease of access for taxpayers.
