BBMP crackdowns on PG accommodation’s
In recent years, the number of paying guest accommodations (PGs) in Bengaluru has surged due to a steady influx of students and job seekers from other districts and states. However, many complaints have emerged regarding poor food quality and inadequate facilities.
In response, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a strict crackdown on unauthorized and non-compliant PGs. Starting in the Mahadevapura zone, BBMP health officials have begun inspecting PGs to ensure compliance with food safety norms and licensing regulations.
So far, action has been taken against 100 PGs found violating these standards. Some PGs have already been shut down, raising serious concerns among property owners who had converted their residential buildings into commercial PG accommodations. The crackdown stems from violations of building bylaws and operating commercial establishments in areas not permitted for such use.
According to BBMP Health Commissioner Vikas Kishore Suralkar, PGs located on roads less than 40 feet wide in residential areas are not allowed to run commercial activities. Many of these PGs reportedly lack proper maintenance and operate without required permissions. As a result, several PGs have emptied, and property owners are facing uncertainty.
While some are appealing for permission to resume operations, BBMP officials stated that each case will be reviewed after verifying relevant documents. This move has disrupted what had become a lucrative industry for many in the city and signals a tighter regulatory grip on unauthorized commercial use in residential zones.
