BBMP begins footpath encroachment clearance drive

In a bid to reclaim public spaces and improve pedestrian safety, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched an eviction drive to remove encroachments from footpaths in various parts of the city. The latest operation was conducted on Muddinapalya Main Road, stretching from Reliance Fresh Complex to Muddinapalya Circle, under the Kengeri division.

The initiative aims to provide a clear and accessible walkway for pedestrians, especially in high-footfall areas where footpaths have been obstructed by unauthorized structures. BBMP officials removed temporary tin roofs, makeshift sheds, billboards, staircases, barriers, and construction materials that had been illegally placed by shop owners and vendors. Street vendors operating pushcarts on the footpaths were also cleared as part of the effort.

According to civic officials, many commercial establishments had gradually encroached upon public walkways, making it nearly impossible for pedestrians to walk safely. This not only caused inconvenience but also posed serious safety hazards, particularly during peak traffic hours and rains.

BBMP has warned that such encroachments will not be tolerated and has announced that the clearance drive will continue. Officials confirmed that the next phase of the operation will be carried out on the third Saturday of this month, and similar drives will be conducted regularly in other divisions. The move has drawn mixed reactions from the public, with many welcoming the initiative, while some vendors have raised concerns over their livelihood being affected. BBMP, however, has reiterated that public safety remains its top priority.
