BBMP bans meat sale, slaughter in Bengaluru on May 12
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a ban on the slaughter of animals and the sale of meat across Bengaluru on May 12, in observance of Buddha Purnima. The directive was issued by the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, Bengaluru, on May 9. Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, marks the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (death) of Gautama Buddha. It is considered one of the most sacred days in Buddhism. Devotees observe the occasion with prayers, meditation, compassion, and a strong commitment to non-violence. To honor these principles, particularly ahimsa (non-violence), several Indian states and cities enforce temporary bans on animal slaughter and meat sales during the festival.
Following this tradition, the BBMP has implemented the meat sale and slaughter ban to ensure the sanctity of the day is upheld throughout Bengaluru. In related news, the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has issued an advisory urging passengers to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled flight departures. The advisory, released on May 9, cited a nationwide heightened security alert as the reason for the updated travel guidelines.
“In view of the nationwide heightened security alert, enhanced screening measures are in place across all airports. Passengers are advised to arrive at least three hours prior to departure to allow for a smooth check-in, security, and boarding experience,” the KIA statement said.
