BBMP bans meat sale in city today for Ram Navami celebrations
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a ban on the sale of meat within its jurisdiction on Sunday, April 6, in observance of the Hindu festival Ram Navami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Rama.
The BBMP’s Animal Husbandry Department issued an official directive stating that slaughter and sale of meat, including chicken and mutton, are strictly prohibited for the day. Violators will face legal action.
The ban comes as disappointing news to meat lovers who often plan elaborate non-vegetarian meals for Sunday gatherings with friends and family. The BBMP clarified that this decision is in line with respecting religious sentiments and traditions associated with the festival.
In addition, the Shivamogga City Corporation has extended the ban on meat sales for two days – April 6 for Ram Navami and April 10 for Mahavir Jayanti. Authorities have warned that any violation of these directives will result in strict action.
For those still wanting to enjoy non-vegetarian food on Sunday, suggestions include purchasing meat a day earlier and storing it appropriately. For those who avoid meat on Saturdays due to personal or religious beliefs, egg-based dishes such as omelettes, egg curry, or burji can serve as alternatives. Online food delivery platforms also remain an option for ordering from favorite restaurants.
