BBMP announces regular pay for sanitation workers
In a significant development for the city’s sanitation workforce, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced that the salaries of newly regularised pourakarmikas (sanitation workers) will now be disbursed through the HRMS (Human Resource Management System) software, ensuring transparency and consistency in payroll processing.
The BBMP’s Chief Accounts Officer has issued an official order stating that 12,692 pourakarmikas who were previously employed under the Direct Payment System (DPS) have now been regularised within the municipal corporation.
This move brings much-needed relief and recognition to thousands of workers who have long been demanding permanent employment status. According to the order, these pourakarmikas will receive salaries equivalent to those of permanent civic employees, and all payments will be processed via the HRMS platform beginning from July 2025. The circular further directs all concerned departments to implement the revised payment system without delay.
This marks a major policy shift by the BBMP aimed at streamlining worker management and ensuring fair compensation for ground-level sanitation staff. The implementation of HRMS is expected to eliminate discrepancies and delays in salary disbursement, offering a more secure future for these essential workers. The announcement has been welcomed by the civic community and workers’ unions, who view it as a long-overdue step towards dignity and financial stability for the city’s frontline cleanliness staff.
