Autorickshaw fares in Bengaluru are likely to see a revision soon. A proposal has been submitted to the state government suggesting an increase in the minimum fare for the first 1.9 km from ₹30 to ₹36 and a hike in the per-kilometre charge from ₹15 to ₹18. This recommendation, made by a five-member committee, has received support from Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. The final approval now awaits Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's decision.
Back in March, feedback was collected from both commuter groups and auto unions. While driver unions demanded a minimum fare of ₹40 and ₹20 for every additional kilometre, the District Transport Authority recommended a 20% increase instead, balancing both commuter interests and driver concerns.
Auto drivers were earlier hesitant about fare hikes due to the popularity of lower-cost bike taxis. However, with the recent government ban on bike taxi services in Bengaluru, calls for a fare hike have gained strength.
In parallel, the Transport Department has started cracking down on autos charging unapproved rates and operating via illegal app-based services. On Monday, 22 special enforcement teams from the city’s 11 regional transport offices carried out inspections, resulting in the seizure of 98 autos and the booking of 260 others for various violations.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has instructed officials to take firm action against overcharging, ensuring passengers are not taken advantage of—especially after the suspension of bike taxis. If approved, the new fare structure is expected to provide consistency and fairness in autorickshaw services across Bengaluru.
