Akshay’s family denied higher compensation; BBMP cites limitation of powers

The family of Akshay, who died tragically after a tree fell on him in Bengaluru, has expressed deep anger over the BBMP’s (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) refusal to provide enhanced compensation. His brother Benakaraj accused the civic body of injustice, saying, “They are telling us to approach the government if we want a job or additional relief. This is highly unfair.”

Benakaraj pointed out the disparity in how compensation is handled in different cases. “In past incidents where people died due to stampedes, officials themselves visited victims’ homes and handed over ₹25 lakh compensation. But my brother didn’t die due to any personal fault. He wasn’t drunk or loitering. He died because of BBMP’s negligence,” he alleged.

Responding to the allegations, BBMP South Zone Commissioner Digvijay Bodke said that the civic body had already paid ₹4 lakh towards hospital bills and Rs. ₹5 lakh as compensation to Akshay’s family. He confirmed that the family has demanded a government job for one of the dependents and higher financial compensation, but clarified that BBMP is not empowered to offer anything beyond its permissible limits.

"We have done what is within our authority. Any further compensation or job-related request must be addressed to the state government," Bodke added.

The family continues to demand justice, insisting that Akshay’s death was entirely avoidable and occurred due to civic negligence.
