Addressing the chronic toilet issue with Hi-Tech solutions
In Bengaluru, residents frequently voice their concerns about the lack of adequate public restrooms. The situation is particularly challenging for individuals with disabilities, who struggle to find accessible facilities. In a bid to tackle these issues, a state-of-the-art high-tech public toilet system called 'Ezee is being introduced across the city, designed to be inclusive and user-friendly for all demographics.
The 'Ezee toilets feature separate facilities for men, women, persons with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community, addressing the varied needs of the population. Funded under the 'Shubhra Bengaluru' initiative, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is overseeing the construction of these eco-friendly restrooms in several parts of the city. Importantly, these facilities will be available for free public use, ensuring that all citizens have access to hygienic sanitation.
The 'Ezee toilets incorporate several modern conveniences, including sensor-operated flushing systems and commodes that are seamlessly integrated into the walls, eliminating visible plumbing. Each restroom is equipped with water-saving sensor devices that minimize water consumption. The toilets also feature dual drainage systems, allowing treated water to be reused for flushing in both urinals and toilets. To enhance ventilation and natural light, perforated sheets and polycarbonate materials will be utilized in their design. Furthermore, solar power will be harnessed to meet some of the facilities' energy needs.
According to officials from the BBMP's Health and Sanitation Department, the toilets are engineered to be easily accessible and clean, located in strategic areas where the need is most pressing. The name 'Ezee' is derived from the English term 'Easy,' reflecting the intent to provide ease of access to users. Currently, 40 'Ezee toilets are in various stages of development across the city, with the first facility already operational near Yelahanka Lake. Ten more toilets are under construction at lake sides in the Bommanahalli and BTM Layout areas, with plans to have additional facilities completed by the end of this year.

The first phase of this initiative has seen the completion of 20 toilets in various locations, including Sarakki Lake, which are designed to be eco-friendly and accessible. Unlike the high-tech 'Eeji' model, these initial facilities lack the advanced features but aim to provide basic sanitation needs. The second phase will focus on constructing 'Ezee' toilets with modern amenities akin to those found in airports and luxury hotels.
