In a significant infrastructure boost, the Union Government has approved a ₹458 crore railway doubling project in Karnataka. The project will cover a 23-kilometre stretch between Toranagallu and Ranjitpura in Sandur taluk of Ballari district, enhancing both passenger and freight traffic capacity.

Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna confirmed the development, stating that the railway line, which is currently single-track, will soon be upgraded to a double-track route. This move is expected to benefit lakhs of commuters and industries in Ballari, Koppal, Gadag, and surrounding districts. The doubling will significantly support iron ore movement and cargo operations, including multiple terminal developments. The Ministry projects an increase in freight capacity by 5.64 million tonnes annually post-completion.

Officials added that the improved line will not only streamline daily train operations but also promote industrial, educational, and commercial activities across the region. The upgrade is part of a broader push to modernize Karnataka’s railway network, which already includes doubled routes like Bengaluru–Hubballi, Bengaluru–Mysuru, and Bengaluru–Kalaburagi.

Meanwhile, under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, Odisha’s Puri railway station is also undergoing a ₹177 crore redevelopment aimed at world-class standards. A total of 59 stations in Odisha are being revamped under the scheme, with a combined investment of ₹2,379 crore. The Toranagallu–Ranjitpura project aligns with the government’s long-term goal of improving transport logistics and fostering regional economic growth through better railway infrastructure.
