The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, with an estimated cost of ₹3,626.24 crore. This new phase will expand metro connectivity across Pune through two elevated corridors.

The corridors will extend the current Vanaz-Ramwadi route with two new segments: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi, covering 12.75 km and adding 13 stations. These areas include fast-growing suburbs like Kothrud, Bavdhan, Kharadi, and Wagholi.

The cost will be shared equally by the Central Government, Maharashtra Government, and international funding partners. The project is expected to be completed in four years, according to an official statement.

This expansion fits within Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), aiming to strengthen East-West public transport. The new corridors will serve major IT parks, business zones, schools, and housing areas, increasing metro usage and reducing private vehicle traffic.

The extension will link with Line-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court) at the District Court Interchange, enabling seamless multimodal travel.

Bus connections from cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahilya Nagar, and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will also be integrated, allowing travelers to switch easily to the metro.

The new metro routes will help reduce traffic on Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering a faster, safer, and eco-friendly transport option. By 2027, daily ridership is expected to grow by 96,000, reaching 3.49 lakh by 2057.

The project will be carried out by Maha-Metro, and pre-construction activities are already underway. This move is expected to boost Pune’s growth and ensure sustainable urban development.
