Statistics Day marks 75 years of vital surveys
New Delhi
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) announced it will celebrate the 19th ‘Statistics Day’ in New Delhi on June 29 (today). This special day is observed every year to honor Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a key figure in statistics and economic planning in India.
The main goal of Statistics Day is to help people, especially young students, understand how important statistics are for making plans and policies that help the country grow.
Since 2007, every Statistics Day has focused on a special theme. This year’s theme is “75 Years of National Sample Survey,” marking the huge role these surveys have played in giving reliable data for government decisions.
Minister of State Rao Inderjit Singh will open the event. To celebrate 75 years of the National Sample Survey, the government will release a special commemorative coin and a custom stamp. Important reports like the Sustainable Development Goals – National Indicator Framework Progress Report 2025 and studies on nutritional intake in India will also be released.
A new mobile app called GoIStat will be launched to help people easily access official statistics. During the event, the prestigious Professor C.R. Rao National Award in Statistics will be given, and winners of a Data Visualisation Hackathon will be honored.
The event will include a film showing the survey’s 75-year journey and a panel discussion on how new technologies are affecting official data collection.
Around 700 people are expected to attend. This celebration highlights how statistics support India’s progress and help build strong policies for a better future.
