SAIL supplies 31,000 tonnes for Zojila Tunnel
New Delhi
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied over 31,000 tonnes of steel to the under-construction Zojila Tunnel, the company announced on Monday. This makes SAIL the single-largest steel supplier to the ambitious project, which will be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bi-directional tunnel when completed.
The Zojila Tunnel, located at an altitude of 11,578 feet in the Himalayas, spans over 30 kilometers. It will connect Srinagar and Leh through Dras and Kargil, providing all-weather connectivity on the vital Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway. Once completed by 2027, the tunnel will greatly improve civilian travel and military logistics in the region.
SAIL’s steel supply includes TMT re-bars, structural steel, and plates. “Projects like Zojila Tunnel trust SAIL’s strength and quality, reaffirming our role in nation-building,” the company said in a statement. SAIL continues to provide materials as the project moves forward.
The company has also contributed to other major infrastructure landmarks like the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and several key bridges.
Beyond infrastructure, SAIL showed strong financial results. It reported a standalone net profit of ₹1,178 crore for the January–March quarter of 2024–25, a 16.5% rise from ₹1,011 crore in the same period last year. Revenue from operations rose by 4.9% to ₹29,316 crore. The company also proposed a final dividend of ₹1.60 per share.
SAIL’s involvement in the Zojila Tunnel project further strengthens its position as a key contributor to India’s growing infrastructure sector.
