Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a public sector company under the Ministry of Railways, has secured a new contract worth Rs 143.3 crore from South Central Railway. The project will upgrade the electric traction system in the Salem division of Southern Railway.

According to RVNL’s stock exchange filing, the work includes converting the current 1x25 kV system to a more advanced 2x25 kV system. This upgrade will take place on the Salem Junction–Podanur Junction and Irugur–Coimbatore Junction–Podanur Junction sections.

The upgrade aims to increase Southern Railway’s capacity and help it achieve its target of moving 3,000 metric tonnes of freight. The project will be completed in 24 months, and the Rs 143.3 crore cost includes all taxes.

This new order follows RVNL’s recent success in becoming the lowest bidder for a Rs 213.22 crore project from South Central Railway on June 30. Despite a slow start in FY25, RVNL has maintained its revenue target of Rs 20,000–Rs 22,000 crore for the year.

RVNL’s shares closed flat at Rs 391.2 on the National Stock Exchange on Friday. The company has a strong project portfolio, including new railway lines, track doubling, electrification, metro works, bridges, and institutional buildings.

RVNL is also focusing on clean energy. The company is exploring a partnership with Russia’s Rosatom to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to support large infrastructure projects like the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway line.

This new electrification contract highlights RVNL’s growing role in modernising India’s railway network and supporting sustainable transport solutions for the future.
