Reliance Power, led by Anil Ambani, plans to set up a 1,500-MW gas-based power plant overseas and has entered several international tenders. According to sources, the company has submitted bids for gas power projects in Kuwait, UAE, and Malaysia as part of its global expansion plans.

Recently, Reliance Power secured two major projects in Bhutan — a 500-MW solar project and a 770-MW hydropower project — marking the biggest Indian private investment in Bhutan’s energy sector.

For the new overseas plant, Reliance Power plans to use two 750-MW modules of advanced equipment it already owns in India. The project could bring up to Rs 2,000 crore to the company through asset monetisation. A company spokesperson confirmed its active participation in these global tenders.

Earlier, Reliance Power imported three modules of 750 MW equipment from General Electric (GE), USA, for a planned project in India. One module has already been sent to Bangladesh for a project with Japan’s JERA. Now, the company aims to use the remaining two for new overseas plants.

Gas-based power is in high demand in Kuwait, UAE, and Malaysia because it is seen as a cleaner energy source. Usually, equipment for such projects takes 3-5 years to arrive, but Reliance Power has 1,500 MW equipment ready, allowing faster project completion.

Besides gas power, Reliance Power is focusing on clean energy, with plans for 2.5 GWp of large solar projects and over 2.5 GWh of battery storage systems in India. This makes it a top private player in solar and storage solutions.
