Redesigning tech jobs can help fill gaps

Indian employers can close skill gaps in the tech workforce by redesigning roles instead of replacing workers, according to a new study released on Thursday by Pearson, a global learning company.
As automation and AI change job structures, the study suggests that updating roles for better use of technology can boost productivity and help employees focus on learning new skills. The research studied five top tech jobs in India—system software developers, programmers, network architects, system architects or engineers, and system analysts.
Findings show that by 2029, each tech worker could save nearly half a day per week by using tools like AI chatbots and robotic process automation (RPA). This time saved can be used to improve skills rather than hiring new people, helping businesses grow from within.
Vinay Kumar Swamy, Country Head at Pearson India, said that role redesign lets companies unlock hidden value within their teams. “In a fast-changing digital economy, workforce development must be a top priority,” he said.
Instead of replacing staff, companies can retrain existing workers, which also provides job security. Swamy added that up to 17 hours of monthly time could be saved per worker by 2029, allowing businesses to rethink how work is done.
The study highlights that tools like ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot and internal process bots are key in reducing work hours. Weekly task time could drop by 2.5 to 3.9 hours, giving room for a shift in how core duties are defined.
This approach can help India stay ahead as a global tech leader by aligning people, productivity, and innovation.
