PM Modi highlights India’s steel growth at industry meet

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India’s steel industry during his virtual address at India Steel 2025, calling it a vital force behind the nation’s development and future goals. Speaking at the 6th edition of the international steel conference, PM Modi emphasized the sector’s key role in India's journey toward becoming a $5 trillion economy.
He stated that India has become the world's second-largest steel producer and aims to increase output to 300 million tonnes by 2030 under the National Steel Policy. He linked the steel sector’s confidence to infrastructure support from the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which connects mines and steel units for better logistics.
PM Modi also announced the government’s commitment to using Made in India steel for constructing public buildings, highlighting how government projects drive steel consumption in infrastructure. He added that India must reduce its reliance on imported high-grade steel, particularly for defence and strategic needs.
“India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier and Chandrayaan mission both used Indian steel,” he said, expressing pride in the country’s growing capabilities.
India Steel 2025, held from April 24-26 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, is co-organised by the Ministry of Steel and FICCI. It brings together policymakers, investors, and industry leaders to discuss the sector’s trends, challenges, and Vision 2047. The event promotes investment, industrial growth, and job creation in one of India’s key industries.
