OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, announced the next phase of its global ‘AI for Impact Accelerator Programme’ in India, offering a year-long support to mission-driven organisations leveraging artificial intelligence to address real-world social challenges. The initiative will provide 11 nonprofits with new API credits, raising the total technical grant value to $150,000.

API credits act as prepaid funds, allowing users to access OpenAI’s tools without monthly billing. This programme is part of the broader ‘OpenAI Academy’, aimed at making AI more accessible and practical for solving pressing issues. Over the past year, Indian nonprofits in this programme have created AI-driven solutions across healthcare, education, agriculture, disability inclusion, and gender equity, impacting underserved communities significantly. The programme, in collaboration with The Agency Fund, Tech4Dev, and Turn.io, offers technical guidance, cohort learning, and early access to OpenAI’s latest AI models.

OpenAI also recently hosted a workshop in India to demonstrate the capabilities of its AI technology, enabling organisations to design scalable solutions. This aligns with the government’s ‘India AI Mission’, which seeks to democratise AI access and foster innovation tailored to India’s social and economic needs. Pragya Misra, Policy and Partnerships Lead at OpenAI India, lauded the cohort for creatively applying AI with empathy to solve complex problems. OpenAI plans to expand the programme further, supporting new organisations later this year, focusing on practical and human-centered AI impact on the ground.
