A recent report reveals that 78 percent of Indian employers plan to hire more women for blue-collar jobs in 2025, up from 73 percent last year. Conducted by job platform Indeed, the study highlights an increasing push toward gender diversity in the workforce.

Currently, women hold 20 percent of blue-collar positions in India. Retail and healthcare sectors have the highest female participation at 32 percent, while industries such as banking, financial services, IT, and telecommunications report less than 10 percent.

Financial independence is a major driver for women entering blue-collar jobs, with 70 percent of respondents citing it as their primary motivation. Despite increased hiring, experts emphasize the need for better retention strategies, career advancement, and policies ensuring financial security, flexibility, and healthcare.

Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales at Indeed India, stated that businesses must invest in skilling, mentorship, and leadership programs tailored for women in blue-collar roles. He added that increasing women's participation is not just about diversity but an economic necessity.

Meanwhile, government data highlights a rising trend of women availing social security schemes. As of March 3, over 30.68 crore unorganised workers have registered on the e-Shram portal, with women making up 53.68 percent. The portal, launched in 2021, provides a Universal Account Number (UAN) to help workers access welfare benefits in sectors like construction and domestic work.

The report underscores the ongoing efforts to boost female employment in blue-collar jobs while calling for policies to sustain this progress.
