New Delhi
The Central government announced a major achievement as the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) completes ten years. Since 2016, enrollments in the life insurance scheme have grown by 699 percent, rising from 2.96 crore in March 2016 to 23.64 crore by April 2025. PMJJBY was launched on May 9, 2015, to offer affordable life insurance to Indians, especially those with little or no coverage. Before the scheme began, only around 20 percent of India’s population had insurance. Now, it has reached millions across the country.
For just ₹436 a year, PMJJBY provides ₹2 lakh life insurance coverage in case of death from any cause. It is available to people aged 18 to 50 with a bank or post office account. Coverage continues until the age of 55, and no medical tests are needed to join. Enrollment is simple and can be done at banks, post offices, or online. As of March 2025, the scheme had processed 9,37,524 claims, out of which 9,05,139 were paid. A total of ₹18,102.78 crore has been disbursed.
The scheme has helped bring insurance to women and rural areas. Over 53 percent of the beneficiaries are women, and more than 72 percent live in rural India. These numbers highlight PMJJBY’s success in reaching people who previously had little access to financial protection. The Finance Ministry called the growth incredible and said it proves the government’s efforts to offer social security and financial inclusion for all are working.
