Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated on thursday that India must play a crucial role in the emerging world order, emphasizing that global leadership will not be solely determined by developed nations.
Speaking at a media event in the capital, Sitharaman highlighted that while developed countries have capital, trade and technology will shape the future. “India must actively participate in this global reset,” she said, stressing the need to boost per capita income and enhance India’s status as a global business hub.
She noted that India is well-positioned in technological advancement and can lead in multiple sectors. “We have shown that when it comes to deploying technology, we can do it at scale. India can also assist friendly nations and establish a global technology group to drive progress worldwide,” she added.
Sitharaman remarked that multilateral institutions are losing influence, making bilateral relationships more crucial. India must strengthen these ties, not just for trade and investment but also for strategic partnerships.
She urged a shift in mindset, stating that India should not see itself as the same nation it was post-independence. “We are committed to promoting Indian manufacturing. Imports will be encouraged only if they support our industries,” she affirmed.
The finance minister also called for state governments to actively support economic reforms, as they are essential to India’s overall growth. “Reforms should not be solely a Union government agenda; every state must take them seriously,” she concluded.
