India’s Fish Output Doubles to 95.79 Lakh Tonnes
New Delhi
India’s fish production has more than doubled in the last 11 years—from 95.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2013-14 to a record 195 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25—highlighting the success of the Centre’s ‘Blue Revolution’, the government said in a statement ahead of National Fish Farmers Day.
Inland fisheries and aquaculture saw a 140% increase, showcasing the effective use of water resources and government support. Shrimp production jumped 270% over the decade, making India a global shrimp export leader. Seafood exports crossed ₹60,500 crore, generating jobs and empowering fishing communities.
Since 2015, the government has invested ₹38,572 crore in the fisheries sector. To celebrate National Fish Farmers Day 2025, the Department of Fisheries will host an event at ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar, on July 10, attended by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh and other dignitaries.
Key announcements will include new fisheries clusters, ICAR’s annual training calendar, and guidelines on seed certification and hatchery operations to promote quality standards and skill development.
The event will also honour fishers, startups, cooperatives, and KCC cardholders. Selected PMMSY-supported projects will be inaugurated virtually, with foundation stones laid for upcoming initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and entrepreneurship in fisheries.
National Fish Farmers Day celebrates the contributions of fish farmers toward food security, rural employment, and a sustainable blue economy. Their dedication plays a vital role in meeting protein demand and driving inclusive growth in India’s aquaculture sector.
